As technology evolves, scam tactics evolve. One way that Google is tackling this is through affirmative litigation, taking legal action against those who abuse our products and systems, and paving the way for others to follow suit.

March 2025

Fake business profiles and reviews in "duress" verticals

Lawsuit filed against against a Maryland resident and multiple "John Doe" defendants who used fake reviews and deceptively edited Google Business Profiles to target users searching for urgently needed (duress) services like locksmiths.

October 2024

Fake reviews on Google Maps

Lawsuit filed against against a Bangladeshi national and multiple "John Doe" defendants who collectively sold and posted thousands of fake reviews on multiple platforms, including both Google and Amazon.

April 2024

Cryptocurrency confidence scams

Lawsuit filed against transnational fraud ring who uploaded fraudulent cryptocurrency confidence scam apps on Google Play and tricked users into downloading these apps via SMS campaigns and affiliate marketing.

November 2023

Bard malware

Lawsuit filed against a group of bad actors who misled people around the world into downloading malware by pretending to be Bard.

DMCA abuse

Lawsuit filed against Vietnam-based individuals who exploited Google's DMCA takedown process to have competitors’ legitimate websites delisted, i.e. removed from search results.

GMBEye

Lawsuit filed against an individual and his businesses for posting fake reviews on Business Profiles in Maps, fraudulently verifying them, and then selling businesses “leads” listed on the fake Business Profiles.

CryptBot malware

Case filed against Pakistan-based distributors of Cryptbot malware, which we estimate to have infected approximately 670,000 computers, targeting Google Chrome users to steal their data.

Lawsuit against two Russian-based individuals operating a massive "botnet" (a network of compromised devices) that targeted Windows users worldwide.

How to report bad behavior

On Google

If you encounter inappropriate content or an issue within a Google product or platform, you can often report it directly within the product itself.
